About Our School Compost Program

Did you know that much of the waste leaving the school cafeteria is not in fact garbage, but a highly reusable resource? The World Wildlife Fund estimates that over 500,000 tons—or one billion pounds—of food waste every year comes from schools.

When your school chooses to compost its leftover food scraps, these organic materials are kept out of landfills and instead, turned into a natural fertilizer that can be used to revitalize soil and grow even more nutritious food.

Through our information guides, training sessions, and all school assemblies, Farmer Pirates is there to provide education, offer support and answer questions along the way to help launch a successful school composting program.

Here’s how it works

  • A compost bucket icon

    Reach Out

Once you fill out the School Composting Interest Form, we will work together to create your school composting program proposal.

  • A teaching icon

    Roll Out

We help train staff, student leaders, and can also provide a school assembly. Both your outdoor collection totes and liners will be dropped off. Then your school is ready to start!

  • A veggie scraps icon

    Fill Up

Begin your school composting program, collecting all food scraps and acceptable compostable materials into the totes.

  • A Farmer Pirates Compost truck icon

    Pick Up

We empty your totes on your scheduled pickup day. You can track your program's progress with our weekly, real-time Diversion Reports.
